Boot lintels were used in the 1960's/70's, the external leaf of brickwork is unsupported except by being cantilevered off the inner leaf. These have a tendency to rotate. They also act as a cold sink and are colder than the surrounding cavity walls hence condensation issues. You do not often get a chance to see the rear of one, but we found one!
