Elif Can - "From Data to Knowledge: Understanding and Enhancing Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production"
Published at : December 10, 2021
Elif Can 's (PhD) seminar for Che 579 on December 2, 2021.
Abstract:
Global energy demand has been increasing continuously and greenhouse gas emission from fossil fuel combustion is a serious problem. Therefore, clean and sustainable energy production has drawn attention recently. Sunlight driven photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical hydrogen production from water are considered as potentially cost-efficient methods to produce hydrogen fuel with little impact on the environment. However, the low activity under solar light illumination and the rapid recombination (reverse) reaction which reduces hydrogen yield are two major drawbacks for the mentioned reactions. This seminar focuses on photochemistry from two different complementary aspects. In the first part, the datasets developed in the field of photocatalysis and photo electrochemistry from published articles are analyzed to reveal critical factors by using machine learning tools. Several algorithms such as association rule mining, decision tree, random forest and deep learning were implemented on the datasets developed in R and Python environment for this purpose. In the second part, a new photocatalyst (and photoelectrode) was proposed, designed, and tested to observe whether the above-mentioned issues can be settled or not.
Bio:
Elif Can graduated with a PhD in Chemical Engineering Department from Boğaziçi University in 2021. She got her BSc and MSc degrees from the same department in 2013 and 2015, respectively. She studied photochemistry from two different complementary aspects during her graduate studies under the supervision of Prof. Ramazan Yıldırım. On the computational part she worked on the databases about photochemistry (and related topics) and their modelling with machine learning tools. She also carried out experimental studies to enhance the activity of photocatalytic hydrogen production. She’s currently working as a post-doctoral researcher at Middle East Technical University with Prof. Deniz Üner.
